This thesis exposes the history of mosaics in the island of Puerto Rico. A subject rarely treated in academia due to the lack of resources, Hector managed to collect and amase an important number of images creating an inventory vital for the understanding of the development of this art in Puerto Rico. Their use in private residences and meanings surrounding their location in such spaces, their historical context and techniques are thoroughly exposed in Hector's work. As an art historian I could fully grasp the relation between the patterns and techniques and the social changes happening in the capital of the island throughout the twentieth century.

An outstanding contribution to the crafting of a revisionist modern history of Puerto Rico through a systematic study of mosaic art in San Juan, P.R. Relying on still-preseved mosaic art in San Juan as historical documents, Dr. Lopez captures a holistic historical reality of a 1920-1940`s Puerto Rico by studying the political and social discourses trapped within mosaic art pieces made during that period. One of his biggest contributions through this study certainly is the tracking down, clasifying and inventory of 60+ residences in San Juan that preserve these historical mosaics. Definetly, a work that needed to be done to shed light on the possible uses and abuses of mosaic art in an early 20th century Puerto Rico, as an exclusion instruments that denoted the opulence of an absent foreign capital while perpetuating the misery of a starving working class. As historian, I found it fascinating to review a work that uses innovative research methods and contributes to the making of a revisited history of the island. Highly recommended.

This research has served as an excellent resource for the students I have taught and the pieces I have written on Puerto Rico. El Mosaico was particularly useful in a course I co-taught this semester on design for decolonization and sovereignty in Puerto Rico While most of Dr. López's focus is on architecture as one of the determining factors in the development of mosaics in Puerto Rico, his work also provides crucial insights into the history of architecture, visual arts & the perspective from the educational institutions in Puerto Rico during the 20th century.
